The Delaware Area General Assembly (Area 12) is seeking an A.A. member interested in serving as our Area Webmaster and helping us maintain a reliable, useful, and welcoming online presence for the Fellowship.
Area 12 currently utilizes Network Solutions for its domain and email services. While maintaining a relationship with our current provider is certainly an option, continued use of Network Solutions is not a requirement of this service position.
Our present website was intentionally designed around a relatively simple “edit and post” approach, allowing routine information to be updated without complicated programming or specialized development. Area 12 would like to preserve that simplicity and ease of use, whether with our present provider or another appropriate platform recommended in the future.
The Webmaster is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the Area 12 website and works collaboratively with Area Officers, Committee Chairs, DCMs, and other trusted servants.
As a component of the Area 12 Public Information Committee, the Webmaster works closely with the Public Information (PI) Chairperson to help ensure that information made available through the Area 12 website is current, accurate, appropriate, and useful to our membership.
What Does the Commitment Look Like?
The position generally requires approximately 15–20 hours of service each month, although the time commitment may vary around Assemblies, Area events, website updates, and other special activities.
Suggested Qualifications
An interested member should have:
- At least three to five years of continuous sobriety;
- A working knowledge of websites, web hosting, domains, email systems, and common website protocols;
- Sufficient technical experience to maintain and troubleshoot an existing website and related services;
- The ability to maintain—or help Area 12 transition to—an easy-to-use website platform that does not require advanced technical knowledge for routine updates;
- An understanding of anonymity, privacy, security, and responsible handling of information in an online environment;
- A working understanding of the Twelve Traditions and Twelve Concepts for World Service, particularly where they intersect with technology and digital communications;
- The ability to work cooperatively with Area Officers, Committee Chairs, DCMs, and other trusted servants;
- A willingness to respond reasonably promptly when information needs to be added, corrected, or removed;
- A willingness to maintain basic documentation of website procedures, accounts, and processes so that knowledge belongs to Area 12 rather than to any one individual; and
- Most importantly, a willingness to approach technology as A.A. service.
Technology in Service of the Fellowship
The Webmaster is not expected to make decisions about Area policy or independently determine what information Area 12 should communicate. The role is to provide the technical knowledge and service necessary to help the Area carry out those decisions effectively.
The Webmaster may also be asked to offer informed recommendations regarding website platforms, hosting, email services, security, accessibility, and other technology needs. Those recommendations should emphasize simplicity, reliability, reasonable cost, ease of rotation, and the long-term needs of Area 12 rather than dependence upon any particular vendor or individual.
Technology may be the tool, but carrying the A.A. message and serving the Fellowship remain the purpose.
