THE AREA 12 COMMITTEE STRUCTURE -
Our service committees are created by, and responsible to, the Area Committee. These committees do not set policy or decide issues. Rather, they make recommendations by way of reports to the Area Committee and the Area Assembly at their regular meetings. Each committee may create ad-hoc committees, which are responsible to the committee. With the exception of the Convention committee, the Area Chair appoints committee chairpersons. The Convention Chairperson is normally the Immediate Past Delegate. In most cases, the committee descriptions assumes that the Area is not actively involved in the 12-step activity; that is because Area 12 has three Intergroups (that have counterpart committees) which are actively involved in this particular work to varying degrees. Additionally, there is always the possibility that some activities have been taken on by Districts or Groups.
It is not the purpose or intent of the Assembly to overlap or replace the work being done by the Intergroups (or Districts or Groups). Therefore, the first priority for each committee is to determine what is already being done and by whom; the second is to provide Conference approved materials to aid and assist in the 12-step work being done.
Because they are the basis for the functioning of the Area, it is suggested that committee chairpersons be familiar with The AA Service Manual, AA Comes of Age, and the GSO Guidelines. Volunteers are always welcome to participate; contact the Area Chair to get involved: P74area.chair@delawareaa.org
